Candidly Classical Concert

Congratulations to Langley and Cooper orchestras for a great combined concert on Tuesday, February 21st. The evening started off with The Jam, a band formed by Wesley Chang featuring several Langley Orchestra seniors and lead singer Lily Chopus, performing in the Black Box.

The orchestra concert featured all three Langley Orchestras (Concert, Philharmonic, Symphonic) as well as Cooper’s top 2 orchestras (Chamber, Symphonic) each performing 2 pieces in preparation for Assessments. Langley’s Concertmaster Audrey Goodner wowed the audience with an amazing solo performance of Vivaldi’s “Winter.”

The concert program can be found here:
The concert also showcased artwork by senior violinist Victoria Wang (program cover) and sophomore bassist Riley Seewer. Riley’s artwork was displayed during Langley Orchestra’s performance of “The Elements” by Richard Meyer.

Finally, we are happy to share a photo of (most of) the Langley Orchestra Class of 2023.

Preparations for our February concert
Our February Pre-Assessment concert will take place at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 21 in the Langley auditorium. Cooper Middle School’s top 2 orchestras will be joining us as our schools prepare for Assessments. As always, our concert is free and will be video recorded.
Students are required to wear Langley Orchestra formalwear – either the Langley Orchestra dress or a black tuxedo with white shirt, black bowtie and black cummerbund. Please note that solid black socks and solid black dress shoes are also required… no sneakers or boots. Also note that Doc will be grading students on their concert attire, as we prepare for Assessments and Carnegie Hall. Please be sure to double check all concert attire.
Students are required to attend concert-day rehearsals and attendance will be taken. The rehearsal schedule is:
- 3:00 Concert Orchestra
- 3:45 Symphonic Orchestra
- 4:30 Philharmonic Orchestra
- 5:00 Preconcert Dinner (cafeteria)
- 6:15 Hospitality – Langley Hall
- 7:00 Concert Begins
- 8:30 Class of 2023 Photo
SENIORS! A class photo will be taken at the conclusion of the concert. Please stay dressed in your formalwear for the photo.
Hospitality – please consider donating food for our reception area and/or volunteer to help with the preconcert dinner or our hospitality tables. We would especially like to make a positive impression on all of the Cooper MS families coming for the concert!
Preconcert Dinner – will include a choice of Dominos pizza, side salads, focaccia bread and sodas/waters. Please be sure to sign up and pay the $12 at CheddarUp by Wednesday, February 15th.
Donut Fundraiser – a quick reminder that starting at 3:25 pm on concert day, Krispy Kreme doughnuts will be sold in Langley Hall. Sales will be CASH ONLY – $10 for a box of 10 glazed doughnuts. Note that we have been asking Krispy Kreme to include only 10 doughnuts per box to make our cash sales easier at $10 per box instead of $12.50 for a full dozen.
Trip Rehearsal & Meetings February 28th – the MANDATORY Carnegie rehearsal takes place on Tuesday, February 28th. Trip students are required to attend this rehearsal (cellists/bassists bringing their own instruments to Carnegie will be required to bring their instruments to this rehearsal) from 3:00-5:00 pm. Rooming assignments will be shared after rehearsal and students will enjoy a pizza dinner in their chaperone groups from 5:00-6:00 pm. Parents will then join the meeting from 6:15-7:30 pm (cafeteria).
Assessments on Saturday afternoon, March 4th – Assessments will take place at South Lakes HS on Saturday afternoon, March 4th. Symphonic Orchestra is scheduled for early afternoon, and Philharmonic Orchestra is scheduled for later in the afternoon. Specific arrival times/schedule will be posted shortly.

Langley Orchestra was especially proud as the host school to have the most (16) students from any high school in the district. Senior district orchestra students performed Mikhail Glinka’s “Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila,” Eric Whitacre’s “A Boy and a Girl,” Johann Strauss’s “On the Beautiful Blue Danube,” and Robert Longfield’s “Rondo in Blue.” Foster Beyers, JMU’s Director of Orchestras, served as the senior district guest conductor.

Langley HS last hosted DHO back in 2020, right before the pandemic, and some traditions started in 2020 had to be renewed:
